THE DEATH of a Tottenham man last night came after a pre-planned operation to arrest him, police have confirmed.

A 29-year-old man, named locally as father-of-four Mark Duggan, was shot twice by an officer from the Metropolitan Police's specialist firearms team CO19 in Ferry Lane, as part of the force's Operation Trident after a shoot-out at about 6.15pm.

The officer who was shot at appears to have been saved by his police radio, after a bullet was found lodged in it. The officer was taken to hospital but later discharged.

The Independent Police Complaint Commission, which is investigating the shooting, said that officers stopped a minicab in Ferry Lane to arrest the 29-year-old passenger, but the attempt ended in him dying at the scene.

Operation Trident was set up by the Met in 1998 to investigate gun crime in London's black community.

Asylum seekers Rioted in Italy!

In Italy, at least 30 people were hurt during clashes between asylum seekers and the police on Monday.

The immigrants set fire to rubbish bins and car tyres before lashing out at officers in the south-eastern city of Bari.

The men also blocked traffic on a local highway and a long-distance railway track delaying transport services.
Twenty officers were injured in the standoff.

The immigrants said they were angry at delays in processing their settlement claims. Later, officials held discussions with the men near a holding centre where they were staying.

A town's female deputy mayor has been arrested after an alleged attack on a man who suffered a broken jaw and smashed ribs and needed 27 stitches.

Liberal Democrat Judith Best, 51, attended a police station last Saturday and was arrested for actual bodily harm with conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

The deputy mayor for Lambeth in south London was bailed until September.

Her son, Scott Richards, 31, is understood to have also been arrested on Sunday following a police chase.

Officers said they were still looking for others in connection with the incident.
 
Neil Potter, 41, from Streatham, south London, is alleged to have been assaulted in the town in the early hours of Friday.
